Heart-On Life Website & Logo

Heart-On Life Website & Logo

Heart-On Life is the creation of Rachel Santos. Through arts, events, and workshops, Heart-On activations awaken us to the true nature of our existence. They are also fun, embracing silliness and sparkle. Rooted in positive change, there is a big component of social good: Fun-Raising Artivism.

Rachel came to me for a website and logo. As we talked through the project, I supported her in organizing the various components and weaving in the different threads. As she zeroed in on the name, I developed the logo. The Heart-On logo is an original symbol that may feel familiar but actually did not exist before. Using sacred geometry, I combined a traditional yin yang with a heart shape and a yonic form. The images that populate it include the elements, and glitter.

Rachel Santos: "Maya is so much more than a creative, talented and highly skilled web and graphics designer! She is also an artistic life designer and teacher. Working with Maya is an absolute joy and pleasure, and I have learned so much from her. She showed me how to manage many things I felt incapable of doing, and empowered me to keep updating my website myself, as my business grows... [Continued below]

Rachel Santos: "We started by getting clear on my vision for the website, and my business. I was full of ideas, but lacked cohesive clarity - being a very "out-of the box" kinda person, in a business of lots of diverse offerings, I didn't know how to present it all without losing my true essence, and in a way that encompasses the full scope of what I do. Maya listened intently, and I really felt heard. She took it all in stride, and generously shared ways to address challenges from a design perspective. Many times over she came up with ideas to solve multiple issues with one brilliant solution, astounding me with her genius again and again.

She designed my logo and I love it! I continue to work with her for ongoing projects, and have enthusiastically referred others to her. Beyond her design skills, her communication is fantastic, she is super conscientious about keeping to the budget, timeline and other agreements, and when last minute tweaks and changes are requested, her turnaround times are quick and efficient. The work that she produces is amazingly beautiful! Thank you Maya, you are a design magic-maker extraordinaire!"

Macbeth Punk Adaptation Flyer

Macbeth Punk Adaptation Flyer

Stages on the Sound is a nonprofit theatre company that brings arts education and theatrical productions to Catholic youth in the greater NYC area. Stages produced a new adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth with a Scottish punk aesthetic for students in grades 6–12.

There is an electric guitarist on stage bringing a chaotic, anarchic feel to play, with the rising power of Macbeth asserting his will over the kingdom. It deals with themes of what is order, who is in control, what is chaos; and through it all is this punk feel and near-constant driving rhythm.

For the graphic I created a digital photocollage painstakingly mashing up Sid Vicious and King Edward. The iconic line, "Is that a dagger I see before me?" takes on a new form as a smashed electric guitar now doubles as a dagger. Plaid grids, strings and frets, and wild diagonals collide to visualize order, instability, and chaos.

Marketing Image for Full of Grace

Marketing Image for Full of Grace

Full of Grace: Journeys of LGBT Catholics is a docudrama that explores the intersection of faith and sexual identity through the first person accounts of LGBT Catholics. The play is composed entirely of interviews from over 30 individuals including clergy, religious, and lay people spanning in age from 19 to 85 from across the United States. The play explore themes such as inclusion and exclusion, self-acceptance and shame, integrity, family, relationships, and marriage, as well as individual experiences of God and Church. These are the untold stories of disciples seeking a place at the table and the fullness of life to which God calls them.

The play's creator, Robert Choiniere, needed a graphic for the premiere of Full of Grace as a stage play. The graphic needed to show both Catholic and LGBT identities as simultaneous and affirm them as cohesive, rather than presenting them as mutually exclusive or fundamentally fractured.

I used the signature LGBT pride rainbow to color a cloud, an abstraction of God. From this ephemeral cloud, three people originate: one in prayer, one clergy member, and one in study. Each person is awash in a different blend of hues, suggesting the range of experiences and emotions of LGBT Catholics. The words Full of Grace appear in calligraphy reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts. The whole image has a watercolor feel, giving a gentle sense of water and light.

I also drafted this invitation email in Gmail, including images and links:

Jonny's Panini & Coffee Bar Logo

Jonny's Panini & Coffee Bar is an Italian coffee bar offering breakfast, baked goods, and a wide range of panini in a petite space. I first saw Chef Jonny Giordani on an especially entertaining episode of the Food Network competition, Chopped, which he won. I then had the pleasure of meeting him and designing a logo for his eatery's new location in Manhattan on 9th Ave and 38th Street.

Windsor Terrace Food Co-op

The Windsor Terrace Food Coop is a member-owned and operated organization in Brooklyn that opened its doors in the summer of 2015. As a member, I work a 2-hour shift every 6 weeks. I also love to contribute artistically to marketing and communications.

Chalkboard Signage

During a shift, a manager told me and my shiftmate that credit card fees were a big cost--and one we could reduce. We brainstormed how to communicate this to members and shoppers. As a result, I drew this cartoon which is on display by checkout.

Cartoon: Cash vs. Card

In June 2017 the Windsor Terrace Food Coop celebrated its 2 year anniversary with an open house weekend and special festivities. I volunteered to help plan the event and also designed a flyer for promotion in the neighborhood.

Midwood High School opened its doors in Brooklyn, NY in 1941. The school has a rich legacy of musical performance, including a long-standing tradition called SING. Organized by class, students would devise original musicals approximately 40 minutes long. Every SING performance told an original story with creative characters and involved musical numbers. Each class performed its piece in an annual competition to be the winning SING.

The Midwood High School Alumni Association has archived recordings from seven decades of SING, as well as other special soundbites. They wanted to make this audio available for listening. To this end, I created a music website for the MHSAA on Bandcamp.

I listened to each audio recording with growing curiosity, discovering the story as it unfolded. I received each SING as one long file, and I cut it up into individual tracks using audio software. I named each track to give a sense of storytelling. I also wrote descriptions for each SING, as well as the MHSAA bio. The header image I created from Midwood memorabilia I photographed during a visit to the school archives. The whole process of digging into the school's creative history was enthralling.

I especially loved this hilarious musical meditation on Time. Listen as the Musicians of Time & Life who keep time for the world tire of their job and decide to hand it over to humans.

Midwood's Class of 1959 compiled many of the school's most memorable sounds. This "talking yearbook" was made into a record that accompanied every 1959 Epilogue yearbook.

Recordings shared on the MHSAA Facebook Page garnered interest and promoted alumni conversation.

I zeroed in on the KSH monogram, circle format, and typography early on. Then we explored many color combinations before landing on turquoise & navy.

Holistic Health Branding

Holistic Health Branding

Ameliorative Therapies is a holistic health service based in NYC and offered by Travall Croom, a Licensed Massage Therapist and Licensed Acupuncturist. Travall's approach combines traditional Eastern understanding and contemporary Western science. He has a unique ability to translate ancient ideas into today's vocabulary. Beyond giving patients excellent therapeutic treatment, Travall is able to explain exactly what he is doing and how it helps your body.

This combination of East and West, and the clarity of Travall's insight into the nature of the body's workings, were the inspiration for the Ameliorative Therapies logo.

Travall Croom: "Maya is simply amazing! I needed a logo created for my business but had no idea of what I wanted or what I wanted it to look like. Maya and I spoke on the phone about my practice, vision, and goals. From that 30-minute phone call, she was able to come up with an idea and concept for my new logo. Besides being a great artist, Maya has the innate ability to connect with her clients; capture their passions, and convert them into something visual."

The logomark is based on a Fibonacci spiral, which is a growth pattern found in nature, science, and biology. The spiral is illustrated in both a curve, representing the fluidity of Eastern philosophy, and in a triangle, representing the linearity of Western science. Both paths, curved or angular, point to the same apex, the peak of wellness.

Children's Christmas Play

Children's Christmas Play

Stages on the Sound is a nonprofit theatre company that brings arts education and theatrical productions to Catholic youth in the greater NYC area. For Christmas 2016, Artistic Director Will Ditterline wrote an original musical play inspired by the Christmas carol of Good King Wenceslas. The production was seen by over 6,000 students in grades 1–5 from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, and Albany.

The flyer for the play needed to appeal to children ages 6-11, as well as to school administrators and decision makers. The design makes use of a delightful double image. The double image serves to show King Wenceslas in two states, first in childlike play (as we see him in the start of the production), and then in a journey to generously give to the needy (as we see him in the end of the play when he has grown in maturity).

Autumn Walk Typeface

Autumn Walk Typeface

Autumn Walk is a high-resolution photographic typeface I created from real autumn leaves, an acorn, and two little plant bits I collected for no apparent reason while on a walk. When I got home I started playing at arranging the same four leaves and three nuggets into different letters of the alphabet. In no time, I found myself hours into a lengthy creative process that involved arranging and photographing each letterform, color editing the photos, silhouetting each letter's nooks and crannies, and compiling 26 huge files into an alphabet. It was an enormous indulgence and an enormous joy.

My deep love of both nature walks and letterforms culminated in this personal project. If you'd like to use this font, please contact me.

Midwood H.S. Alumni Association Website

Midwood High School opened in Brooklyn, NY in 1941 and recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary Jubilee. The school has a rich, well-documented history. Its robust extracurricular culture includes a legacy of musical performance and an involved student government.

The Midwood H.S. Alumni Association needed a new website that looked clean and professional, invited alumni to join and contribute, and beautifully showcased its content, including photos, music, press, and gems from the school's archives. The initial goal was to promote attendance to the 75th Anniversary Jubilee Celebration, then transition into a full, well-rounded site.

The MHSAA also needed cohesive branding, which I created using the school's signature color blue and a real, fabric varsity letter M that I photographed during a visit to the school's archives.

I really enjoyed learning about the school's history--including getting to see "Grease" actress Didi Conn's yearbook photo!

Wendy Guida, Midwood HS Archivist & MHSAA: "Maya was recommended to me when our alumni association's website needed an overhaul.  She had the vision to see beyond what we had, while preserving the content we had that worked.  Maya listens.  She listened to what we wanted and built it in ways that were even better than we had imagined.  She has risen to the challenges our organization faced as we went through staffing changes and planned and executed a huge fundraising event.  Her work made it all possible and made it all go so smoothly.  Maya is also a pleasure to work with, as she is a bright, funny and engaging partner who made our website hopes a reality."

Podcast Coloring Book

Podcast Coloring Book

Loud Speakers Network and State Farm created a special edition 8-episode podcast, Color Full Lives, geared toward people of color looking for advice on how to get started or advance on their dream careers. Hosts Angela YeeTatiana King Jones, and Francheska Medina offer their perspectives on the fields of Entertainment, Tech, and Wellness. The podcast touches on many areas of life and feels like a candid conversation between friends.

This coloring book was commissioned as a wrap gift for those who worked on the podcast, as well as a gift for select listeners. I listened to episodes of the podcast to find quotes, relevant themes, and inspiration for activity pages. With the exception of the Color Full Lives logo on the cover, I created all of the illustrations. The piece has a finished size of 8.5"x11", expertly printed and saddle-stitched by Radix Media, a worker-owned union print shop.

Loud Speakers Network hosted a lounge space at AFROPUNK Festival Brooklyn 2016. I designed a step-and-repeat backdrop for the lounge as well as custom photo booth props inspired by their various podcasts. I printed, hand-cut, and hand-assembled the photo booth props, then headed up to Commodore Barry Park myself to deliver them amid the excitement of the event's check-in and setup.

Visitors to the LSN Lounge included notable Black Lives Matter activists Netta Elzie (left) and DeRay Mckesson (center).

GetManu.com showcases the vibrant art collection of photographer Manu Sassoonian. Manu's collection centers on Haitian paintings, with additions in African sculpture and Huichole art. I kept the design clean and minimal to allow the art to capture eyes as it does so well.

Manu Sassoonian: "When I decided to have a website I had no clear ideas as to how it would take shape. All I had was a collection of images. I am very happy that Maya built a wonderful site by combining images from my stock agency, my iPad, and proverbial shoe boxes, into well organized sections including a shop."

La Mer Branding & Website

La Mer Branding & Website

La Mer is the site of Meredith Spratt, a Holistic Health Coach who has a lot of insight and inspiration to share in different forms, including writing and art. I was inspired by her moniker, La Mer, "the ocean," and designed the site so that the posts fill the depths of the ocean. The feather logo carries the influences of sacred geometry and the yin yang, while suggesting flight and perpetual motion.

Meredith Spratt: "Working with Maya on the creation of my website was an extremely satisfying experience. Maya took the time to really listen to the vision I had for my site, and then was able to bring it to life! Her artistic abilities are one-of-a-kind. She welcomed me to contact her at any time during the process with questions or comments regarding ideas I had, and worked patiently and respectfully with me. Truthfully, the essence I was hoping to capture with the website was made doable because of Maya! I am forever grateful to have crossed paths with her."

Manic Panic Branding & Photography

Manic Panic Branding & Photography

Manic Panic is a hair color brand with punk roots, celebrity clients, and a global presence. I created the branding for a new line of pastel colors called Creamtones. I hand-lettered the logotype to give that creamy, dreamy feel. I also shot some original photography of trending looks featuring Manic Panic cosmetics, glitter, and accessories.

Fun Fact: The first time I dyed my hair I used Manic Panic in Shocking Blue.

Poster Design for "KEEP"

Poster Design for "KEEP"

KEEP is an original play by Francesca Pazniokas, produced by Wide Eyed Productions. Informed by true life experiences, KEEP tells a story of hoarding, sisterhood, and family trauma. For the design, I first read the whole play so that I could bring in appropriate items and themes. I then staged a box with some relevant objects and photographed it. Then working digitally I brought in more objects, piled them impossibly high, and digitally manipulated the whole scene in a painterly chiaroscuro style.

Francesca Pazniokas: "I so appreciated how the design ties in all these little plot points (the postcards, the lamp, the receipt, the dead plant, the records, etc.). It looks great--as does the back of the postcard. Thank you for a thoughtful and fun design!"
